Organization Experience

RSOG is an organization with a strong expertise in the field of maternal, newborn and reproductive health. Moreover, RSOG delivered trainings that target health professionals, doing research as well as consultancy in the same field that bring solutions that improve women’s health in Rwanda.

Specifically, RSOG has professional members with tested and proven experience in maternal, newborn and reproductive health, equipped with up-to-date knowledge in the field of Gynecology and Obstetrics and they are competent to conduct mentorship and provide high quality antenatal, obstetrical, gynecological and neonatal care.

RSOG has demonstrated strong skills development and shown innovative solutions in facilities where our members provide training and mentorship sessions to young doctors to improve maternal and newborn health.
RSOG has been able since its creation to conduct eight annual scientific conferences with impressive turn-out, participation of both national stakeholders, international speakers and partners. The consecutively held annual scientific conferences were centered on the following themes:

Improving Maternal and Newborn Health in Rwanda as Post-2015 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In October 2015, RSOG was officially accepted as member of International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO)

Adequate Obstetric Care to Improve Neonatal outcomes

2017

RSOG hosted regional ECSAOGS conference with a theme of Ending preventable maternal and neonatal death through improved health providers’ competences. This conference was marked by the launch of the East Central and Southern Africa College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ECSACOG)

In December 2020 RSOG hosted FIGO regional conference.

2022

In November 2022 RSOG hosted its 8th Annual Scientific Conference with a theme Accelerating SRH and Maternal Health Services Amid Covid-19.

Some conferences were preceded by a one-day preconference workshop on ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology, colposcopy, office hysteroscopy and laparoscopy.

In order to strengthen knowledge of the members, a monthly CPD event is conducted to discuss new updates in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology, this provides a forum of exchange between members.

RSOG has been actively involved in an outreach program in rural areas to teach doctors about management of obstetrics emergencies:

Since 2014, RSOG implemented a teaching program on C/section for newly graduated medical doctors in partnership with International Organization for Women Development (IOWD), an American NGO involved in women’s health to improve skills of general practitioners in District Hospitals. The training consisted of theory sessions on basic anatomy and surgical skills technical complemented by practical sessions in the hospitals.

From July 2016 to 2018 in partnership with MCSP/JHPIEGO, a similar program was extended to combine caesarian section training with management of obstetrical complications. It was undertaken in 12 administrative districts of Rwanda (20 Hospitals). In total a hundred medical doctors were mentored and validated.
Since 2017, RSOG in partnership with TSAM initiated mentorship activities in 6 administrative districts of Rwanda (10 Hospitals) and TSAM activities until June 30th, 2020, so far 48 medical doctors were validated.
Since January 2019 to date, RSOG supported by IntraHealth-USAID through Ingobyi Activity and MOH is conducting monthly mentorship activities in 28 hospitals on management of obstetrical complications and providing cesarean section skills to newly graduated medical doctors. During this partnership, RSOG mentors apply a Low Dose High Frequency (LDHF) training approach to deliver basic knowledge to manage emergencies in obstetrics and neonatal care.
In October 11, 2019, RSOG in collaboration with ENABEL conducted the training and mentorship of 33 nurses and midwives on Obstetrical Ultrasound, following our report they have been performing very well
Since December 2018 to December 2021, RSOG in partnership with Imbuto Foundation and MOH through BAHO NEZA Project, has also been involved in Family Planning outreach and Post abortion care activities around the country both at the district level and in health centers.
Since October 2020 up to date, RSOG supported by ENABEL through BARAME Project and MOH is conducting monthly mentorship activities in 14 hospitals on Quality Management of Emergency Obstetrical & Neonatal Care by Obstetricians & Gynecologist.
Since May 2021 to September RSOG in partnership with SPIDER conducted a Telehealth for Cervical Cancer Screening and Care Services Project to increased access to early cervical cancer screening and care services using telehealth applications among women in Nyamasheke district and Kigali in Rwanda.
